Public Schools

Bel Aire will soon be home to two new USD 259 public schools.

The Wichita Public School District (USD 259) decided to locate two new schools in Bel Aire, Kansas, and a $370 million bond passed in November designed to create smaller classes, safer children, economic vitality and stronger futures provides the funding.  In October 2009, the Board of Education was able to purchase 140 acres of land in Bel Aire, Kansas for a new K-8 School and a new High School.  These two projects are part of Phase 1 of the projects allocated from the bond.

K-8 School

Located on the Southeast corner of East 53rd Street North and North Woodlawn, the new elementary / middle school will house grades kindergarten through 8th grade. The 135,000 sq. ft. building will be able to hold approximately 800 students with the ability to grow with the community.  Construction on the K-8 School will begin in August of 2010.

High School

The new high school will occupy 100 acres on the Northeast corner of East 53rd Street North and North Rock Road.  The 190,000 sq. ft. Kansas High School will open with approximately 800 students and the potential to expand up to 1,200 students.  A new district stadium and track with seating for 5,000 are also part of the plans.  Construction on the high school will begin in July of 2010.

FEMA shelters have been included in the plans for both the high school and the K-8 school, and both are scheduled to open in 2012.
