Fire Prevention Tips for Seniors

  • Be careful with electrical appliances. Check cords to make sure they are not frayed or damaged. Don't overload electrical outlets and make sure your home has overload protection with fuses or circuit breakers.
  • When cooking, never leave food unattended. Pay special attention when cooking with oils or fats. If a fire starts on the stovetop, never throw water on it or try to pick up the pan. Most grease fires can be stopped by covering the pan and turning off the heat.
  • Turn pot handles away from the front of the stove, but not over another burner. Keep pot holders and oven mitts within easy reach.
  •  Avoid wearing long, loose sleeves or loose clothing when cooking.
  • Get your heating system and chimneys inspected yearly. Keep space heaters away from clothing, drapes, walls, or anything else that could catch fire. Don't leave fireplace fires unattended and use fire screens properly.
  • Be very careful when smoking. Use a large, deep ashtray and wet cigarette butts before disposing of them. Avoid smoking when drowsy, lying down, etc. Check armchairs and sofas for lit embers after smoking.
