1. 2. How can I file a backflow test form?: Backflow tests completed in the City of Bel Aire must use a City of Bel Aire Backflow test form. Other cities’ forms will not be accepted. Forms are available online and at Bel Aire City Hall. Test results may be emailed to backflow@belaireks.gov or mailed to Bel Aire City Hall, Attn: Backflow, 7651 E Central Park Ave, Bel Aire, KS 67226, or faxed to (316) 744-3739. Backflow tests are typically filed by the contractor.

3. Who can I contact to complete my backflow device testing and what is the cost?: A certified technician, licensed with the City of Bel Aire, may completed your backflow device testing. The city maintains a list of licensed contractors on the city website. Each contractor can provide information regarding the cost of testing services. The city collects a $5.00 filing fee, which is typically paid by the contractor when test results are filed with the City.

What if I do not use my lawn irrigation sprinkler system and do not want to test my backflow device?: The resident may take steps to disconnect their irrigation system from the City’s water system, therefore backflow device tests would no longer be required. Residents have two options to remove their lawn irrigation system from the City’s water supply. A certified technician, licensed with the City of Bel Aire, may apply for a permit, and disconnect the system. Or the homeowner may apply for a permit and disconnect the backflow device. In both situations, City Code will need to be followed and inspected by the City upon completion of work.

6. How often does the backflow prevention device need to be rebuilt?: The City updated their rebuild requirements. Backflow prevention devices shall be rebuilt or replaced upon testing failure or the City Inspector’s determination that the system poses a significant/imminent risk to public health.

7. Is a permit required to rebuild or replace a backflow prevention device?: Rebuilds and replacements of backflow prevention devices must be completed by a certified technician, licensed with the City of Bel Aire. A permit, to be requested by the contractor, is required if the serial number changes, which is typically the case with a replacement, but not a rebuild. The certified technician shall test the backflow device and file test results after a rebuild or replacement of a backflow device.

8. What if I am installing a new sprinkler system?: Installation of a lawn irrigation system requires a city permit whether the homeowner or a Bel Aire licensed contractor installs the system. Further, it is the responsibility of the building and premise owners to have each backflow preventer device tested and inspected immediately after initial installation. Thereafter, lawn sprinkler backflow devices shall be tested, and test results filed on even-numbered years.
